The Rachel Turnage Scholarship

Rachel Turnage was born in 2006 and, at the age of 3, was diagnosed with leukemia, a rare

form of blood cancer. For the next 7 years, Rachel battled cancer with high doses of

chemotherapy and radiation. Her hero was Sonic the Hedgehog, who is known for defeating

impossible obstacles, was always by her side. To this day, when people see Sonic, they think of

Rachel.

While receiving treatment, she took up piano, karate, Girl Scouts, as well as making the all-A

Honor Roll for 3 years in a row, and 3rd place in the BBES spelling bee in 3rd grade. She was a

gifted and talented 4th grader with particular interest in science and computers, a magnetic

personality, and was known for her loyal friendships.

Rachel was diagnosed in 2015 with a brain tumor and fought her final battle in January of 2016,

leaving behind a legacy of love, character, and her dream to make a difference in the world of

science and technology.

In honor of her memory and her enthusiasm for science, Rachel's family has created the Rachel Turnage Science Scholarship at Camp Invention. This year the scholarship committee is asking applicants to answer the question "How would you use to science to help the world or other people?"
